Masonic Knowledge The Hidden Mysteries Of Nature And ScienceOur masonic ritual throws up some words and phrases which we often accept as being what they are: something to remember when performing ritual, but not necessarily investigated to see whether there is some especial meaning to be elucidated. One such phrase is the instruction in the 2nd Degree Charge for the candidate to be “permitted to extend his researches into the “Hidden Mysteries ofNature and Science”. What could this possibly mean?

Middlesex In The EastIf you asked the average East Ender if he knew that the East End had previously been part of Middlesex, you might have been scoffed at, but the map above will show that the County of Middlesex embraced an area from the River Colne in the west to the River Lea in the east and was girded in the South by the River Thames. The Isle of Dogs was in Middlesex? You might hear the response; “You’re having a laugh”.

Defying Gravity“If there were no night, we would not appreciate the day, nor could we see the stars and the vastness of the heavens. We must partake of the bitter with the sweet.” – James E. FaustThese words may well ring true of the fortunes of Masonic Lodges, where over time there will be periods of rude health, with double ceremonies and lengthy guest lists, while at other times there can be pressure to find enough Brethren to fill the Lodge offices and a sense that the future is uncertain, to the extent that handing back the warrant is considered.

Merry Christmas (1926)

This picture was very kindly given to our secretary W. Bro Ian Clabon, by a Mr Karl Christmas, (nice name by the way) in Bedfordshire, whose grandfather happened to be Worshipful Master George F Tidbury of the Dalhousie Lodge in 1926 having observed that the Lodge Master for Dalhousie Lodge No. 865 in 1924 was an A. E. Kennedy and was wondering if it was the then well known illustrator and cartoonist Albert Ernest Kennedy who drew the card for George?, I’m wondering, is anyone old enough to remember or having done research that far back to know the facts?.

Maybe something to keep you occupied through the winter months.

Either way, enjoy the picture.

HIGHLIGHTS OF
THE MEMBERS’ PATHWAY EVENT IN LEICESTER

At the start of June, thirteen Provincial Grand Masters and their Provincial Membership Teams came together in Leicester to learn more about the Members’ Pathway, discuss challenges and frustrations and share good practices.

The Members’ Pathway provides a toolkit of good practice for Brethren to use in their Lodges to Attract, Engage and Retrieve members. It is a suite of ideas which have been developed from good practices already in operation across UGLE and seeks to provide the tools so we can Attract Members and Grow Lodges.

The short film below gives some insight into what was learnt in Leicester.

Highlights of the Members’ Pathway event held in Leicester on 3rd June 2023

Any Brother can access the Members’ Pathway via the bUGLE website here.

If this is the first time you are learning about the Members’ Pathway,
this PDF booklet may be useful.

The key to successfully using the Members’ Pathway in your Lodge is to establish a Lodge Membership Team, so as a group, you can work to Engage and have fun with current members, work to retrieve those members whose attendance may have lapsed or might have left but could potentially be encouraged back if his or the Lodge circumstances have changed and by reviewing and learning how your Lodge works best.

Developing a plan and utilising the tools is an effective technique to explore ways to attract new members.
